Curriculum:
Highland Charter Public School serves kindergarten through
second grade students from throughout Gaston County. The North
Carolina Standard Course of Study combined with the Core Knowledge
curriculum provides a strong instructional program.
Our students
are immersed in the basics of literacy and math with a twist
of Core Knowledge. However, the basics is not the total of
our program. Highland believes children need to experience
the world, so experiential learning has always been a component
of our curriculum. Expeditionary learning plays an important
role in our curriculum.
We recently
purchased AlphaSmarts and plan to integrate them into all
areas of our curriculum. Each 2nd grade student has an AlphaSmart
to use in school, on trips, and at home. Also, our younger
students use AlphaSmarts in each class for language activities
and other uses as developed by the staff.
The Accelerated
Reader program and the Accelerated Math program help our students
develop their comprehension and problem solving skills. Our
students learn Spanish using videos and computer software.
The best
thing about our program is our ability to adapt it to the
needs of our students. Our staff is continually working to
provide the best
academically for our students.
