More about hcps

Highland Charter students raise the flag each morning.
Highland Charter is the only charter school administered by a North Carolina community action agency. Gaston Community Action, Inc. received approval from the North Carolina State Board of Education to operate the Highland Charter Public School on March 13, 1997. Highland Charter opened its doors in August 1997 as one of the first charter schools in North Carolina.

The mission of Highland Charter Public School is to be a family friendly school that enhances the learning community, expands educational choice and increases learning opportunities for all children. Our main objective is to help all students be successful by improving their lives through learning. We want our students to learn the information, skills, and values that will help them live productively and responsibly. We also want our students to achieve their highest potential and develop personal responsibility and self-control, and to solve problems by talking them through. We use the Quality School model developed by Dr. William Glasser as the framework and vehicle to achieve our mission.

Highland Charter provides expanded learning experiences for Kindergarten-3rd Grade students integrating curricular, instructional and organizational practices so that they provide enrichment to maximize student achievement across the curriculum. Our goal is to dramatically impact teaching and learning in the earliest grades where the foundation for future learning is truly established.

Highland Charter accepts students from throughout North Carolina and provides transportation in Gastonia and some surrounding areas. Breakfast and lunch that meets the USDA meal pattern is served daily.
